Picture yourself leaving home on a typical day. You get in the car and drive off to the store or to work, mind busy, yet unaware of what was left behind where the car was parked. Oil. Just a few drops perhaps, maybe more. And as you travel down the road a little more drips out, and a bit more after you park the car at your destination. Now imagine the thousands or millions of other vehicles in your town or city, and consider how a little bit of oil gets multiplied into a lot. Add a little bit of rain, and those forgotten drops of oil spring into clear view as the familiar silvery rainbow sheen streaking the puddles and little streams of runoff.
They might seem harmless, even pretty or picturesque, yet those oil sheens that run off of driveways, parking lots, and roadways carry a multitude of toxic pollutants that can wreak havoc on the aquatic environment. The zinc, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that are typically present are harmful to a wide range of aquatic species, and some of those pollutants can bioaccumulate and contaminate the wider food chain.
The use of properly designed oil-grit separators is an important tool in stormwater treatment to intercept oil and fuel that gets spilled in accidents or washed off of sites with heavy vehicle traffic.
